# Short History

For many centuries, tribes speaking Germanic languages lived in the region that is now Germany. [Charlemagne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne), who is regarded as the founder of the German monarchy, originally included them in the Frankish Empire. The Holy Roman Empire expanded to include a large portion of Germany. In Germany, the Kingdom of Prussia existed from 1700 to 1918. The first World War started in 1914. With an estimated 2 million military casualties, Germany was on the losing side of the conflict.

Germany struggled to rebuild after World War One. The monarchy fell because of a revolt. Young leader Adolf Hitler quickly ascended to prominence. He founded the Nazi party, a group that championed the superiority of the German race. When Hitler took power, he decided to grow the German Empire. At first, he captured much of Europe, including France, as he began the Second World War. But Hitler was ultimately defeated by the United States, Great Britain, and the Allies. East Germany and West Germany were created as separate nations following the war.\
\
While West Germany was a free market nation, East Germany was a communist nation governed by the Soviet Union. For the purpose of preventing East Germans from migrating to the West, the Berlin Wall was constructed between the two nations. It evolved as the Cold War's focal point. However, the wall was demolished in 1989 as a result of the fall of the Soviet Union and communism. East and West Germany were officially merged on October 3, 1990, United as a nation **Germany**, sometimes known as the **Federal Republic of Germany**, **German Deutschland, or Bundesrepublik Deutschland.**
